A function on the Sattriya culture of Assam titled ‘Celebrating the life and works of Srimanta Sankaradeva - An Unparalleled Genius’ is being held at the Nehru Centre (the cultural wing of the Indian high commission) in London today, June 29 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. The venue is located at 8, South Audley Street, London W1K 1HF.

The event has been organised by the UK chapter of Friends of Assam and Seven Sisters. The aim is to to spread knowledge of the life and times of Srimanta Sankaradeva. A seminar and illustrated talk on Vaishnavite faith and Sattriya culture of Srimanta Sankaradeva, along with a PowerPoint presentation on the Vrindavani vastra, will be held on the occasion.

The speakers in this function are Richard Blurton, Head of the South Asian Section in the Department of Asia, British Museum, Dr Nicholas Sutton, Director of the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, University of Oxford, and Dr Audrey Cantlie, author of of the book ‘The Assamese’ and Reader Emeritus in Anthropology at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies).

There will be performance of Sattriya Nritya by Sharodi Saikia, renowned Sattriya dancer from Assam who will perform "Dokho Avatar" at this event. She is the Director of Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, Guwahati.

Dokho Avatar - An orchestral odyssey of Sankari music composed by Jayanta Pathak will be launched for global audience at this event. This is the first global instrumental album of the 500 year old Sankari music that includes Bargeet. He is currently based in Atlanta, USA, and has his own studio - Chromatic.

Prominent social activist Rini Kakati has co-ordinated the event. We are very glad and we congratulate the organisers for this event. We may also add that 'Friends of Assam and Seven Sisters' happens to be one of the partners in our forthcoming conference on Majuli to be held in Guwahati on July 8.
